Instagram ads not working? The 8 most common mistakes

The ads are running, the likes are coming in, but the phone stays quiet. Sound familiar? Most of the time the problem is not the budget but the setup. After reviewing dozens of ad accounts for businesses in Baku, we keep seeing the same mistakes. Here are the eight most important.

Instagram ads not working? The 8 most common mistakes

1. Advertising with the "Boost" button

The "Boost" button under a post is convenient, but limited: you get little control over the objective, audience and placements. For serious campaigns use Meta Ads Manager, where you can choose the right objective, build the audience precisely and measure results.

2. Choosing the wrong objective

Meta optimises your ads for the objective you choose. Pick "Engagement" and the algorithm will bring you the cheapest likes and comments — not customers. If you want messages, choose "Messages"; if you want enquiries on your site, choose "Leads" or "Sales".

3. Narrowing the audience too much

A very narrow audience such as "women aged 25–34 in Baku interested only in fashion" makes ads more expensive and leaves the algorithm no room to learn. Meta's system is now quite good at finding the right people within a broader audience — especially when the creative is clear.

4. Running one creative for months

When the same image or video is shown to the same people again and again, its impact falls and its cost rises. Launch 3–5 different creatives in each campaign, compare results and switch off what does not work. If the "Frequency" metric keeps climbing, it is time to refresh.

5. Wasting the first seconds

People scroll past videos very quickly. Videos that open slowly with a logo lose most viewers right there. Show the strongest idea, the problem or the result immediately, and always add subtitles for people watching without sound.

6. Ignoring language for the Baku audience

In Baku, part of the audience responds better in Azerbaijani and part in Russian. Testing the same campaign in both languages, with separate creatives, often changes the cost per enquiry noticeably. Decide which language works for your audience by testing, not by assumption.

7. Sending people somewhere that is not ready

An ad can perform well, but if enquiries go unanswered, the money is still lost. The cases we see most often:

  • Direct messages go unanswered for hours, sometimes days
  • The profile has no prices, address or contact details
  • The website loads slowly on mobile or the form does not work
  • There is a WhatsApp number, but nobody is watching it

Before launching ads, decide who will answer enquiries and how quickly.

8. Not measuring — and changing the budget every day

Likes are not results. Install the Meta Pixel on your site, track enquiries and sales as events and add UTM tags to your links. And remember: every new ad set goes through a "learning phase" — Meta recommends roughly 50 results within a week for it. Change the budget and audience every day and the algorithm starts from scratch each time.

Quick checklist: the right objective, a broad enough audience, 3–5 creatives, strong first seconds, a test in two languages, fast replies, the Pixel and at least a week of patience.

Conclusion

Instagram advertising is one of the most effective ways to find customers in Azerbaijan — when the campaign is set up correctly. If your ads are not delivering, check these eight points before increasing the budget. More often than not, the problem lies in one of them.
